Recently at Target, I noticed some dolls very similar to Bratz dolls on an end-cap of the toy department called, you guessed it, Moxie Girlz™. My first instinct was to cry “RAWR! COPYRIGHT!” and point a lot, but we’re not in the same industry, nor are we spelled the same, so I guess my only course of action (for now) is to buy some that look like us (Lexa for me, and Avery for Kathy) and swallow that lump of “Back off, man!” in my throat.
I’m not a fan of Bratz dolls… it’s no secret. I think teaching our kids to dress like hoochies and want (even more) for materialistic stuff like trendy clothes, make-up and jewelry before they’ve even gotten a training bra is… well, it sucks, in my opinion. Scrape your knees, wait until you’re 11 or 12 to shave your legs and leave the lip gloss to the middle schoolers. But I remember what it’s like — my dad wouldn’t even let me wear colored nail polish until I was in 8th grade. Besides, I played with Barbies and it’s not like she was Amish with her pink dream car and that big ol’ house, plus between shopping trips, she made a good beard for Ken.
It appears that Moxie Girlz, despite their “z” and visual similarities to Bratz are sporting a different angle: Be True, Be You! This motto, from their website:
Every girl has the strength to do something amazing. Anything is possible as long as you stay true to yourself and never give up on your dreams.
It’s nice to see self-confidence and courage being promoted among young girls, with less emphasis on the superficial. Sure, they still make it cute and go for the sparkle — what girl doesn’t love that? (We love bling!) But it’s backed up by a positive message and that we’re down with. So for now, The Moxie Girls™ embrace the Moxie Girlz™!
Now, if only they’d thought to have us do their website…
Hint, hint.
Yea, I noticed they have an error calling a function. I thought, “hrm, too bad the Real Moxie Girls didn’t work on that. I’d never see that error…”
You’ll always be my first Moxie.
I am so glad you got your on Moxie Girlz
You can just tell people that you were the inspiration for the new line :D
Yeah, we’re kind of annoyed at their infringement on our trademark and we may need to address that in the near future, as it’s starting to already become an issue, but for now... this is where we stand with it. Their site could use the original The Moxie Girls™, though, I agree!
I just bought this doll for my daughter who will be turning 5. I vowed that I would not purchase a Bratz product because I did not need to introduce or encourage the look that I feel their style promotes. I saw the Moxi doll on tv and my daughter just had to have it. I had reservations but after looking at them I thought it would be ok. After reading what their motto is and what they stand for I realize that I made a good purchase.
OK…LONG time stalker, first time commenter. I do blog design and illustration (self taught). I have always been a HUGE fan of your work.
That said, I went to a party at Blogher where they advertised the “Moxie Girlz” would be there. Without hesitation, I thought it would be you gals, and I was SO psyched. I was all “I’m going to step out of my comfort zone and introduce myself…blah, blah, blah” (seriously, I totally talked Husband’s ear off about it…)
You can imagine my surprise and disappointment when they handed me that doll:P
So, yeah…I know who the REAL Moxie Girls are;)
Thank you, Nap! What a bummer, though, to hear the Moxie Girlz were at BlogHer. BOO! The REAL Moxie Girls will be at BlogHer next year, so we may have to have rumble or something.
Comment anytime and please do introduce yourself in New York! We totally don’t bite or *anything*. Except Kathy, sometimes she nibbles a little.
They picked up on your hints about doing their site yet?! Their site looks v circa 1990s style!
I really like Moxie Girlz. I am 11 and ,yes, I do still play with dolls. XD I want the Artitude ones because it would be so cool to colour in their clothes. Also have you heard of Liv Dolls? They look pretty cool aswell.
